Derivative: (adj) not original, (n)something derived
1)BDB style damaged alpha male vampires who talk about their damn feelings to anyone who stands still long enough (I know a couple of men - mostly they don't even admit they have feelings, I suspect they'd cut their own tongues out before they talked to another man about them)
2)Twilightesque venom that can turn people into vampires if it doesn't kill them first
3)vampire/human hybrids called day walkers a la Blade
The way this one was going I kept expecting Buffy to show up. On the upside, the writing is reasonable and the pacing is good. Not quite a dnf but there wasn't enough original anything in it to make me consider looking for book 2.
